Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge; My thoughts

Real Techniques miracle complexion spongeI think it’s fair to say that the Pixiwoo sisters have never put a foot wrong when it comes to their cosmetics career. Not only are they successful make-up artists to the stars but they also run a fabulous YouTube channel and have their own range of make-up brushes which are ranted and raved about by beauty bloggers worldwide… I am no exception, their brushes are fantastic!

I will admit that I wasn’t completely sold on the idea of a complexion sponge at first.  I’m a brush kinda gal and have always been. I never bought into the Beauty Blender hype and have read mixed reviews of sponge applicators over and over again. However, I dived into the wild side and bought myself the sponge…(I’m a rebel like that)

Excuse how dirty this bad boy is.. I just used it this morning

You can use the sponge damp or dry but you really do see the best results when the sponge is damp as it helps to blend in the foundation. I find the sponge works best with liquid or mousse foundation but I will admit that I haven’t tried it with powders. Application definitely becomes quicker and easier with the sponge and you aren’t left with any pesky brush strokes. You get a great air-brushed effect that’s natural yet flawless!

Keeping it real with a dirty sponge

What really makes this sponge different is the shape, the flatter end is perfect for patting in the product while the pointed tip has proven really useful for blending concealer into all those nooks and crannies.

The only gripe I have with it, is that I fear it can be quite wasteful. A lot of the product seems to soak into the sponge when you are applying it to your face… or is that just me? You also might need to clean the sponge a little bit more often than brushes, but the process is simple. I usually pop mine in a bowl with hot water and baby shampoo, leave it to soak for about 5 mins and rinse! Easy!

Either way, I love the sponge for applying my foundation and I think I’m converted. I haven’t touched a foundation brush since and that says everything!

The sponge retails for roughly 5.99 EURO and can be found in most good pharmacies nationwide and online.

G’wan and treat yourself now! 🙂

  1. Nice review, Kate!. I am yet to try out sponges. Have heard many rave about the airbrush finish it gives. Btw, 5.99EUR converts to $7.50!. It’s expensive. On my favorite US based online shopping site, it’s usually $6 but since every cosmetics/makeup product has a 20% off now on the site (until 19th Nov), it’s currently only $4.80. Ships worldwide too ♡

  2. I bought a beauty blender a few months ago but I’ve stopped using it. Although the result was pretty good, I agree with you that it can be quite wasteful. A lot of my foundation was being absorbed into the sponge, and I was going through foundation at a rapid rate. So I’m back to using brushes for my foundation.

    1. Yeah i think that’s the only negative that I can find with the sponge, although I find that if I pat lightly I tend to waste less?
I’m torn because I love the finish it gives but I use up my foundation too quick! #beautybloggerproblems
